Our Services

1:1
Mentoring

We’ve seen how therapeutic activities and a trusted mentor can help the most vulnerable girls emerge resilient.

I believe Sunbeams is an absolutely invaluable resource for the young girls of the Charedi community.
The organisation offers somany different activities, but is essentially a placefor young people to learn, develop and connect with others, and I have only ever heard positive comments from the families it serves.

Clinical Psychologist, First Steps Early Intervention & Community Psychology Service / CAMHS

Our 1:1 mentoring sessions are designed as a safe space where young people are encouraged to have a go at things they enjoy, explore their feelings, gain practical coping strategies and develop a positive sense of self.

What you can expect

  • Weekly 60-minute 1:1 sessions with a trained volunteer mentor.
  • Inherently therapeutic activities such as baking, music, art and hairstyling create a safe space for children and young people to relax, increase confidence whilst gaining practical skills to improve their social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Quarterly trips to museums, parks, and restaurants often scheduled around extra-stressful situations such as parent’s admission to hospital or to celebrate mentee’s milestones.
  • Mentees are consistently involved in shaping the service – choosing the sort of activity, day and timing of sessions, planning trips and providing ongoing feedback on their mentoring relationship.
  • Ongoing supervision of mentors by Volunteer Coordinator and consultant clinical child psychologist to monitor performance and identify and address concerns.
  • Working in partnership with parents, schools, statutory services such as CAMHS and local welfare organisations to ensure that progress is carried over across the board and to onward-refer any issues requiring intervention

Frequently asked questions

All referrals can only proceed with written and signed consent from the parent/carer.

The referring body (this may be a child’s school, a welfare organisation or a statutory service who knows the young person or family) will complete a referral form.

We also accept self-referrals. If the initial information shows that this program is suitable, we will conduct an in-person interview with the potential mentee and her parent/carer followed by acceptance and induction to the mentoring program.

No. All referrals require written and signed consent from the parent/carer.

All sessions take place in Sunbeams Centre.

We have 3 mentoring rooms, a kitchen for baking and cooking sessions, fully equipped reading, games and activities library.

Mentors are recruited and selected carefully, after a full assessment showing their suitability for the program.

We will ask mentees some questions at the referral stage to better understand their needs, wants and personality type and then carefully select a mentor based on that plus things like suitable timing and location.

Absolutely. Mentees will chose from a large range of activities – from arts to hairstyling, dance, music, baking and more.
