Group Mentoring

The only place I don’t have thoughts is in group sessions

Mentee 2021

Our group mentoring sessions provide a supportive environment for girls to speak out, share their experiences and get help while building social skills, emotional resilience and healthy relationships.

Young people learn how to effectively engage with one another and work as a team, often for the first time, developing key social and communication skills.

Users, who at first were socially isolated, form lasting friendships and the ability to make new friends in future.

Key components of the service

  • Arts-based group sessions: arts and crafts, music, drama and performing arts
  • Farm-based group sessions
  • Cohorts are put together based on participants’ commonalities, goals, social and communication levels and ages
  • The 5-part progamme delivered over 45 weeks covers: self-awareness, communication skills, finding strength in shared experiences, emotional wellbeing, practical social tips and strategies, building resilience .

Group Sessions on the Farm

Definitely our most popular group sessions are those based on a local farm. The farm is run by community members, two of whom suffered from adverse childhood experiences themselves. Having seen firsthand the therapeutic effects of animal interaction, they are passionate about providing similar experiences for girls in the community.

Girls struggling with low self-esteem, confidence, social and emotional wellbeing enjoy weekly opportunities to meet others in similar situations, enjoy the greater outdoors and pet and nurture farm animals. They also performed farm related tasks such as feeding farm animals, creating name plaques and more, giving them a sense of responsibility and importance.

Using farm-animals as a model, facilitators help mentees to explore key issues such as dealing with their emotions, acceptance and self-care. For example, by discussing animal’s different reactions to feeling threatened, mentees explore their own reactions to threatening situations and discussed coping strategies.

Users are also encouraged and guided to develop and improve vital social and communication skills such as team-working, inclusion, non-verbal communication and more. For 2022, outcomes reported included improved social and communication skills (98%), happiness (100%), confidence (92%), academic performance (89%), relationships (96%).
