“The meeting with Dr Shostak was so helpful. I didn’t realise that I was reinforcing Malka’s* anxiety but now I understand it better. I’ve already ordered the book she recommended and I’m very hopeful”

Ongoing Parent Engagement Sessions

When parents reach out they are often overwhelmed, full of questions and unsure how to deal with their child’s behaviours.

From the very first intake meeting and throughout their Sunbeams experience, we hold their hands and offer robust support. Our programme manager liaises between schools and parents to make sense of the problems, support the parents’ efforts and offer guidance on how to deal with behaviour issues at home.

We also check-in with parents/carers every 6-8 weeks to discuss progress and share any important updates. This feedback guides our volunteer mentors and group leads, helping them respond effectively to each girl’s needs.

Parents Consultation Sessions

To help parents understand a child’s more complex needs, we provide a free professional consultation with our Clinical Lead, Dr Lisa Shostak. Parents receive professional advice, helpful resources and a strategic action plan to support positive change for themselves, their daughter and the family

Hand-held Referrals

We realise that holistic support is the key to sustainable change. When girls and families need support beyond our services, weuse our trusted connections to Hackney SCASC, First Steps, SCAMHS, CYPMHS, and local organisations such as Bikur Cholim and Children Ahead, to refer them onwards. We help parents face the stigma and easily access referrals by getting in touch with service providers on their behalf and following up to ensure support is in place before problems escalate.

What keeps us glowing:

I didn't realise how much Sunbeams can help. They held our hand throughout Ruchi's* school refusal journey in such a caring and professional way. They got us the right support in place, liaised with the school, CAMHS and her mentor so we were all on the same page and made sure things were moving along smoothly. I cannot recommend them enough!

My children have blossomed since staring Sunbeams. They are happier and more confident and feel better with themselves. You have given my girls something that I, in all humility, could never give them.

Sunbeams is a unique organisation. It supports not only girls but also their parents in so many ways. What is truly special is that they are non-judgemental, respectful and highly professional.
