Marking a Year of IWAS

December 2025

Today we are marking the end of a full year of IWAS, Improving Wellbeing Across Schools, funded by The Portal Trust. Five girls’ schools in Hackney l have taken part, and together they have made real progress in strengthening the way they support pupils’ mental health.

Over the past year, each school worked closely with a Clinical Psychologist to look at what was happening for their pupils and staff, what was getting in the way, and what could help. Schools began by completing a structured wellbeing audit and creating a clear action plan mapping out their priorities for the year ahead. They then received a half-day consultation visit each month, where the Counselling Psychologist supported them to plan, develop and implement new practices and policies around early identification, prevention and the promotion of pupil and staff wellbeing.

As part of this work, schools introduced clearer wellbeing pathways, strengthened communication between teams and created simple tools that help staff notice concerns earlier. Many schools also trialled new relational approaches such as regular “Teacher and Me” time, where pupils could check in with a trusted adult. Others developed centralised logging systems for SEND and pastoral care, helping staff spot patterns, share information and respond more consistently. Staff also took part in training and regular reflective discussions, which helped them feel more confident and more prepared to respond when pupils are struggling.

Parents and pupils have begun to feel the difference. Many described improved communication, stronger trust and a clearer sense that emotional needs are being recognised. Staff say they now have a better understanding of what pupils are facing and how to support them before difficulties escalate.

Dr Lisa Shostak, Sunbeams’ Clinical Lead, said:

“The project is a fantastic example of the way in which health and education can work together in a truly collaborative way, leading to meaningful positive change for young people and their families. It is community led, evidence based psychological practice at its very best.”

The work does not end here. Schools now have a stronger foundation and a clearer direction. Sunbeams will continue supporting them to build on this year’s progress so every pupil can feel safe, understood and well supported.
