School Leaders Unite for Mental Health Network Training

May 2025

This month, more than 85 senior staff from 22 girls’ schools came together for a new three-part training series through the Sunbeams Mental Health Network (MHN). Headteachers, SENCOs and Pastoral Leads joined the sessions to reflect, learn and strengthen the way their schools support the mental health of young people.

The training was led by Dr Lisa Shostak and focused on “Active Early Intervention”. Staff explored practical tools for noticing early signs of emotional difficulty, understanding what might sit underneath them, and responding in ways that help prevent problems from escalating. The first session introduced core ideas around emotional regulation and early risk reduction. Follow-up sessions for primary and secondary leaders looked at how these approaches can be built into everyday school life, how to strengthen pupil resilience, and how to manage the referral pathway with clarity and confidence.

Each school also received a new Q&A guide, Thinking of Referring a Child to Psychological Therapies?, which offers clear and accessible advice on when to refer, why referrals matter, and what supportive steps staff can take before involving external services.

Leaders described the series as timely and grounding. One Headteacher shared,
“It gave us language and tools we can use straight away. It felt supportive, not overwhelming.”

Another participant said,
“The mix of expert teaching and honest peer discussion was exactly what we needed.”

This training series forms part of Sunbeams’ wider work to build a strong, connected community of school staff who feel equipped to support pupils early and effectively. We are proud to stand alongside leaders who are working so hard to create mentally healthy schools for every child.
