Sunbeams Receives Go! London Funding for New Movement and Wellbeing Programme

March 2026

We are delighted to share that Sunbeams has been awarded funding from Go! London to launch a new programme combining physical activity with specialist mental health support for girls across our community.

The project, Strong Girls; Strong Futures, will support 40 girls aged 11–16 who are facing emotional difficulties such as anxiety, trauma, social isolation or other complex challenges. Many of these girls struggle to access mainstream activities or support services, leaving them without safe opportunities to build confidence, friendships and resilience.

Through this funding, Sunbeams will deliver a year-long programme of weekly group sessions, creating a consistent and supportive environment where girls can grow physically, emotionally and socially.

Participants will take part in weekly sessions over a full year. Sessions will combine movement-based activities — including dance, aerobics, yoga and cycling — with structured group mentoring and socio-emotional skills development. Physical activities will take place both at the Sunbeams centre in Stamford Hill and outdoors at Lee Valley, giving girls the chance to experience movement, nature and teamwork in a safe and supportive setting.

Alongside the physical activity, trained youth workers will facilitate mentoring discussions focused on confidence-building, emotional regulation and positive peer relationships. The programme also includes wraparound support for families, monthly clinical supervision for staff, and clear referral pathways if girls need additional specialist help.

By combining sport, mentoring and specialist psychological support, the project aims to reduce isolation, strengthen friendships and help girls develop healthier ways of coping with stress and difficult emotions.

Physical activity is a powerful gateway for emotional wellbeing. When young people move, connect with others and feel safe within a group, it creates the conditions for confidence and resilience to grow. This programme allows us to bring together movement, mentoring and specialist support in a way that can make a lasting difference for girls who need it most.

We are deeply grateful to Go! London and its partners for making this work possible. Their support will enable dozens of girls to access opportunities that would otherwise remain out of reach.

We look forward to sharing updates and stories as the programme begins in the coming months.
